How to get to Positano by train
One of the most important means of transport to get to Positano is with the train.
Although, without intending to be ambiguous, bear in mind that there is no train station in Positano or anywhere along the Amalfi Coast.
Therefore it becomes obvious that it is not possible to use a direct train service to Positano and the Amalfi coast. Yet for many people the train is still the best and most comfortable way to make their way towards Positano from the Naples train stations. From here you can take other means of transport to reach Positano and the Amalfi Coast.
The Ferrovie dello Stato trains guarantee fast connections between Italy's most important cities, including Naples - but be careful which station in Naples you need to get off at as there are three different ones:
The station of Napoli Centrale, which is located in Garibaldi Square and is serviced by taxi, buses and the underground to the Circumvesuviana train station in Naples.
This local train company ensures fast and frequent connections between Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula. Once you get off in Sorrento (the very last stop), just outside the train station, you can catch the SITA bus to Positano or other towns along the Amalfi Coast.
Be careful: when you read on the schedule that a train is direct to Naples Piazza Garibaldi station, and not to Naples Centrale station, don’t be concerned as they are in fact, one and the same. The first is just above the second, which is the underground train station of Naples. From the central station you’ll find the trains which depart for Salerno and from here there are also different buses available to take you to buses to Positano or the Amalfi Coast.
The station of Mergillina, which is only 300mt from the port, is serviced by
train, the underground and buses. It is not advisable arriving here if you
I intend going on to Positano as you would need to take a bus to Piazza Garibaldi or Porta Nolana (where the Circumvesuviana trains leave from), or alternatively, you could make yor way to the port where, in summer, you can get a sea connection to Positano and the Amalfi Coast.
The Campi Flegrei station of Naples, which is in the area of Fuorigrotta, is also
serviced by taxi, the underground and buses. This station is not recommended if your are travelling to Positano for the same reasons cited for Mergillina train station.
A few trains of Ferrovie dello stato travel past Naples as far as the train station in Salerno. From here, to get to Positano or the Amalfi Coast, you would need to drive, take a bus, or use the sea transport available during the summer months.
