how to get to Positano by car
If you have decided to get to Positano by car or anywhere else along the Amalfi Coast by car, then you have chosen the most independent and direct way and will avoid the inconvenience of having to utilise different means of transport and having to make connections to the Amalfi Coast, having to carefully plan your trip and making sure everything coincides with the various timetables etc. Reaching Positano by car, just like reaching the rest of the Amalfi Coast by car, is extremely easy, if you have planned your route to Positano in advance.
There are actually two ways of reaching the Amalfi Coast by car, and more specifically, Positano. Both Positano and the Amalfi Coast, are easily reached by car from the north, centre and south of Italy. If you are coming from the central north you should drive along the A1 highway as far as Caserta and then continue along the A2 past Naples. Further on follow the A3 highway and exit in Vietri sul Mare, not far from Salerno.
If you want to stop before and go to Naples first, you should take the ring road and exit in Fuorigrotta to reach the port of Mergellina; or you should exit in Via Marina and reach Beverello port.
If you are coming from the south, in particular from Bari, you should take the A14 and then the A16 as far as Avellino. After that take the E841, then the highway A30 connecting to the A3 in Salerno. Also in this case , if you want to see Naples first, you should continue as far as Pomigliano, taking the highway A2 until you reach the exit Napoli Nord to the ring road.
If you wish to get to Positano and you are coming from the south, from Reggio Calabria, it’s advisable to take the highway A3 as far as the exit Vietri sul Mare, or, even better, is to drive north towards the highway A2 where you can exit at Napoli Nord taking the ring road. Good news: the Salerno- Reggio Calabria highway is toll free!
Finally, if you want to reach the Sorrentine Peninsula from any direction, you will need to follow the A3 highway and take the Castellemare di Stabbia exit which merges with the state road 145 which will bring you to your destination.
If you wish to get to Positano leaving from the Sorrentine Peninsula and arriving in the Colli area (Piano di Sorrento), you then need to take the state road 163 which is, in fact, the only road to Positano.
To follow the route Sorrento – Positano (or vice versa, Positano – Sorrento), it is necessary to allow at least half an hour. Although there is in fact little distance between the beautiful tourist towns of the Amalfi Coast, they are connected by a particularly tortuous stretch of road!
